how about handmade wooden (or wire, or stained glass...) vegetable markers to show whats planted where. you could even make them in the shape of the veggie.

Or maybe a windchime where all the chimes are in the shape of a different veggie?

I LOVE reuseable shopping bags. I have a small collection right beside the back door so I can grab them any time I know I'm going shopping. And on those days when I just happen to go to the store and pick something up I have a couple of foldable bags in my purse. I always disliked the plastic bags I'd get everywhere and the reuseable bags are awesome.

#6. If you sew, you could make him a custom padded vynel kneeling pad, for getting down there in the dirt tending to his veggies. If you like playing with wire, you could make him some cool-looking lattices for veggies to climb....

8. We try to already, but if we are getting more at the store than will fit without getting more bags, we always reuse what we get...paper bags get used for wrapping packages for the mail, and plastic bags get used instead of garbage bags, and for bagging dirty diapers.

9. We're not in the position to do this, but I wanted to thank you for posting it as a wish, because we ARE one of those families in need. Forget buying gifts for the kid, we need help just buying the milk for him to drink! I know a lot of people think about donating to charities, but somehow it doesn't occur to them that they might have a worthy charity a lot closer to home, as it were. Not that people shouldn't pay it forward, a little further away, but...you know what I mean. Eniways, thanks.

10. Working on it! I was being such a dork this year, checking several times daily in the weeks before it started, just that eager for so many more chances a day to still feel like I can help people, despite needing so much help ourselves!

Hmmm...ok, inside crafts not requiring a sewing machine... How about making him a garden stone? Get big piece of tile from a freecycler's leftover home improvement project, or a flagstone from a Home Depot type space, or whatever. Get some outdoor grout. Get some of those glass mosaic pieces from a craft store. You could make him a pretty garden stone that says "Grandpa's Garden" or something.

Oh yeah, standard-size plastic grocery bags are pretty much perfect for the mini-garbages....which in out house means everywhere except the kitchen. I also use them as padding when mailing stuff out or packing for a move.

I'm glad for you that you're in a better spot now. :-) And welcome back!

Also, in regards to #8, in my speech class last week I gave mine on why you should use reusable bags and used Tim Minchin's Canvas Bags (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVh15aUt8-c) in the speech several times. XD

The thing that made me go out and buy some canvas bags was that song. Every time I went to the store I would start singing that in my head and then I would feel guilty about using plastic when I left, lol.

I can definitely do 8, 9, and 10.

As for 6, how about one of those half apron things that ties around the waist that is really just pockets to keep things in while he is working outside?

It's my absolute favorite as well I read it all the time.

I am trying to grant as much as I can. I saved up the entire year for this. I just love to give :)

#6 -- How about a gardening journal? You could design a nice bound journal with different sections for what was planted where, areas to draw out his garden beds, notes on what sort of seeds he likes best, and little pockets for garden pictures or seed packets and things.

#8 -- I am awesome at reusable bags! I have two that live in my glovebox for unexpected shopping and errands, and then big jumbo canvas ones for weekly grocery trips. I'd say I end up with a plastic bag once every 2 months or so. Not very often!

#10 -- working on it! I've been taking notes on wishes I can grant :) I've got a pretty big list going..
