hello and happy holidays!
Dec. 5th, 2008 04:47 pmHope everyone is having a lovely holiday season so far. My name is Whitney, I'm twenty-four and I live in Iowa where I'm an art history graduate student. This is my first time participating in this;
candylea and
8hrs both posted their wishlists and I was intrigued by the concept of this community. I'm excited to participate and hope I can help grant some wishes!
my wishlist:
01. music recommendations and/or mixes. I'm always up for listening to new music; here is the link to my last.fm to give you an idea of what I like. I listen to a lot of indie and alternative but I'll give anything a listen once. I'm also pretty big on classical music and opera too. mp3 mixes that I can upload to my iPod are ideal.
02. reading recommendations. I adore to read and am always on the look-out for new and exciting books. So if there is book you've read that you think is especially amazing, please pass the information my way!
03. links to interesting/informative/entertaining websites. Have any really awesome websites bookmarked? Send 'em my way. I'm especially fond of the educational wiki-type websites that have a plethora of different articles that you can waste hours of time reading. I also like reading about anything in the broad subjects of art, history, and art history. There's no such thing as too much knowledge after all.
04. paid lj time and/or userpics.
05. kindness to the earth. Do what you can with what you have. Bike or walk to work if you can. Carpool. Recycle. Buy local produce and support farmers markets. Use canvas bags for groceries instead of paper and plastic. Donate if possible to the World Wildlife Fund or another nature preservation organization. Every little bit honestly helps.
06. kindness to those less fortunate. In the same vein, donate food or your time to the local homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Give clothes you no longer wear or household items you no longer use to goodwill or the salvation army. Give toys to Toys For Tots. Volunteer out in the community and give some of your time if you can: visiting a lonely person at a retirement home, reading to children at the library, helping care for the animals at the shelter/SPCA...volunteers are so valuable and you can really help to make someone's day a little brighter. Plus, it is rewarding and you'll end up feeling great about yourself. So everyone wins.
07. kindness to the ones you love. Tell those who matter to you how much you love them and tell them often. Hugs are nice, too. ♥
08. have a happy and safe holiday season. Take care and I wish you all the best.
Thanks for reading. If you'd like to contact me, you can reach me at seablues@livejournal.com; don't forget to link me to your wishlist!

Date: 2008-12-06 02:43 pm (UTC)#2 -Don't know if you've read it but Steven Hall's The Raw Shark Texts was amazing.
#3 -Again, you may know these already but TVtropes (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage) and The Den of Geek List of Lists (http://www.denofgeek.com/misc/83834/the_den_of_geek_list_of_lists.html) provide hours of entertaining time-wasting!
#5 -I recycle, have converted my new flatmate to sorting out our trash as well, always switch off appliances and lights when not used, though I'm not a vegetarian I often take the veg option at the school cafeteria and I buy lots of fair trade/organic foods. I also hunt for empty bottles and occasionally dumpster dive :D

Date: 2008-12-07 01:24 am (UTC)#1: Have you ever listened to Tokio Hotel? They are a German band, and their German songs are absolutely amazing. For a first time listener, I would recommend the song "Durch Den Monsun" (Through the Monsoon).
#2: I recently read The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly, and its sequel, The Winter Rose. I am a huge fan of the Victorian era, and both of these take place in that time period, both in London and in New York. The writing is incredible, and they are gloriously long so you get a nice taste of that world. ;)
#6: I donate to Goodwill quite often.
#7: "I love you" are my favorite words. I firmly believe in letting people who matter to me know just how much I value them, and I love when people do the same for me. Hugs are another favorite of mine, so I give them out whenever I can.
#8: Right back at ya! ;)
I hope that you like the recommendations! Merry Christmas. ^_^

06 - Fantastic!
07 - Words can have such a huge impact on people and sometimes a kind word can make someone's day, as you know. :)
08 - Happy Holidays! ♥
