Happy Holidays everyone!
haha, my list this year is almost the same as last :D
my list in no particular order
- Support your local restaurants and shops. Franchises are rolling in money right now and that annoys me. Franchises really hurt small businesses (and sometimes on purpose >_< ) .... and restaurants always takes a nosedive during this holiday. This touches close to home because my family runs a small little restaurant and I've worked in other restaurants during the holiday. I'm not saying boycott franchises completely (though you'd be way up high on my hard core cool list) because you can buy things for cheap from them...(sigh, i'm guilty too) but please take your time to visit local and family run places.
- Something DIY: I love DIY plushies, pins, clothing, jewelery, hats, scarves, toys, bags, etc. I usually make my friends and family DIY gifts and it's fun getting some back in return. Heck, DIY materials would be awesome too.
- uh... Haunted Circus... stuff. Sorry, let me explain. I have this odd love for creepy, beautiful circus music. This has evolved to loving circus related books, merry-go-rounds, freaks, performance animals, and "razzle-dazzle" clothing and makeup. It's a weird hobby, but I was surprised and immensely pleased to find new music and book recommendations last year. I would defiantly love some more.
- Something fairy tales related. I love the old gory stories, the "modern/contemporary" fairy tales, and Disney. I'm always searching for more fairy tale movies and books with a twist.
- Cute stationary, stickers, and related items. I like pen palling, decorating my letters, and my journals. Heck, I'd also like more penpals to boot :D Although I must admit, I have really love "kawaii" type stationary stickers and stationary (I also use them to make magnets, bookmarks, and modge podge them to random things), but I use every and any kinds of stickers.
- Magic yarn balls. HOLY COW THESE THINGS ARE SOOOO MUCH FUN TO MAKE AND RECEIVE! They are basically a huge ball of yarn that has goodies all wrapped up inside of them. Here's a link of pictures to illustrate what I mean
- Music! I love music. Especially music in different languages (and ska... i really like ska). I'm very open to all generas... except country. My favorite is rock, punk, ska (and musicals.. ahaha) and for some reason I think foreign pop is more fun than American ones... even if that language is also in English....I have no idea why. ....... alright, I'm off my tangent box now. Again, I love all kinds of music so please send or recommend whatever you like.
- Nightmare Before Christmas stuff. My friends say it's an obsession... and I feel like they might be right XD
- Earn money and buy fairly online. I used to make Katamari and other types of crafts and earn a bit through it (still do, but I slowed down considerably due to school). When I went to buy things from other sellers, I got screwed over. I never got my $40 back through that seller, but enough people have gotten their refunds back, so her conscience is clear enough to not care about me and the handful of others she screwed over.
- Cool craft tutorials. I love making things for friends and family. I usually go through craft isles in bookstores to check out cute and amazing crafts. If you have any good tutorials or know any good books please let me know. I can sew, embroider, knit, crochet, do paper crafts, decopage, and a bunch of other random things. I'm free to anything and I like to try new things.

Date: 2008-12-12 12:15 am (UTC)1) My family has a tradition of eating pizza every Sunday for supper. We always order from a family owned and operated pizzeria called Mama's Pizza. Excellent food and it's cheap! Win Win!
3) Haunted Circus: First, find and read/watch "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Ray Bradbury. A look at some of the past heroes of the sideshow, check out Daniel P Mannix's book, "We Who Are Not As Others". I have a few others but I'd have to find them to tell you the titles.
5) KAWAII! If you like San-X, go to http://www.shopkawaii.com/ They have some Sanrio/ Hello Kitty/etc stuff but mostly San-X. I found out about this website/store through a convention I went to.
10) Craft Links. I'm a crocheter, a rubber stamper, comic book artist, quilter, seamstress, knitter, do embroidery, beader, bead embroidererererer, and probably a billion other things. Some of my fave links are:
http://www.instructables.com/ It is a how-to mecca of all kinds of stuff.
http://www.craftzine.com/ One of my all time favorite magazines. (And not just because they featured me on my punk chucks. :D) Hm. It appears they have a new issue. Time to go to Borders!
http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory.php If you can't find the pattern here, you'll have to make it up yourself. All crochet, all the time. I think there is a knitting version of this, too. Just substitute Knit for crochet.
Enjoy! Happy holidays!

Date: 2008-12-12 03:48 pm (UTC)3. Yay to Ray Bradbury! I'm adding it to the list of books i want to read. and "We Who Are Not As Others" sounds really interesting.
4. So cute! I just wish Kawaii wasn't so expensive for a single sheet of stickers. If i could magically lasso a kawaii shop close to home I would do it in a heartbeat and save oodles on shipping :D
10. Do you need a subscription to these magazines?
Thanks a bunch!

Date: 2008-12-12 11:18 pm (UTC)The book by Mannix isn't 100% accurate in all its information but it's got some awesome pictures of "different" people. There are some other books that are really good if you're interested in the diseases or disorders of the "Freaks". Also, if you can find it, check out Tod Browning's 1930-something film "Freaks". It has one of my favorite sideshow men, Johnny Eck, the Half Boy, in it. He had sacral agenesis (I know that has to be spelled wrong), meaning he had no lower limbs or waist. However, he was a sideshow performer (didn't just sit on a stool and let people gawk - he put on a show!), was a violinist and pianist, a big band conductor and an accomplished painter. However, in the film "Freaks" there is a scene where he is cleaning a gun or a knife and he looks scary!
Kawaii stuff is expensive - especially if it is the actual item from overseas. Try eBay. You can even find people selling lots where they have 3 pages of this paper, a couple sheets of stickers, etc. Personally, I was at the King Of Prussia Mall (just outside of Philadelphia) about a week ago and spent over $100! (I got two purses, as well as a ton of stationery things for Xmas gifts.)
I don't think that a subscription is needed to any of the links I sent to you. Actually, I know so, because I'm cheap and don't join stuff where I have to pay. (Except LJ.)

Date: 2008-12-12 12:54 am (UTC)* Carnivale - A fantastic tv-series. Too bad they only got to make two seasons. Here (http://www.hbo.com/carnivale/) is a good website. :)
* Nox Arcana has made an album called Carnival of Lost Souls. I love that creepy music. :)
* And over here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfZHJDSuPCI&feature=channel_page/) is one of my favorite music videos on youtube; Dis Moi Pourquoi by Jane Fostin. Very inspirational. :)
Merry Christmas! I hope I introduced you to at least one thing you hadn't heard of before. :D

Date: 2008-12-12 03:27 pm (UTC)4. sweet, I love reading short stories. They're actually my favorite.
Thanks for the list of books. I'm please to say I've read all the Napoli except Crazy Jack (wasn't aware of it) and I really like her versions. I've read a couple of the others too, but I see a good chunk I need to check out from the library.
A really good fairy tale remake I recommend to is is Brair Rose- Jane Yolan (It follows sleeping beauty and mixes history about Holocaust survivors and Elis Island)
Another is Sirens... but I can't remember the author. It mixes the Little Mermaid and Homers Illiad.
