Random wishes from England
Dec. 16th, 2008 11:41 pmMy name is Wendy, I’m 33, and I live in Hertfordshire, England. This is my third year of taking part in Holiday Wishes – I love this community!
Have a wonderful festive season everyone, and I wish you health and happiness for the coming year.
So, my list:
1. ‘The Children of Green Knowe’ on DVD or VHS
This is a childrens’ TV series made by the BBC in the 1980s. It’s not available on official release, but there’s a chap on Youtube who will swap a copy of the series on dvd in exchange for copies of other rare TV series or films. Or he’ll sell you a copy for £12 (including postage to the UK).
This is a wonderful Christmas story that I have such fond memories of and I’ve been searching for it for years. I’d love to watch it with my family this Christmas. I’m not expecting anyone to buy me a copy, but I thought that some of you might be film and TV collectors who might be able to negotiate a swap with this chap.
You can see a clip of the series, and contact the chap with the dvd at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5a0jCn10ro
2. Better health
I suffer from M.E. (also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and have also had issues with depression and anxiety over the last couple of years. This has affected my whole life, from work, to personal relationships to daily chores. If there’s anything you can do to help me get well – offer advice, therapy, healing – I’d really appreciate it.
3. To find my path
Partly because of my illness I don’t feel I’ve found my real path in life. I’d like to find it and be able to walk it.
4. Christmas cookie cutters
My partner really wants to make Christmas cookies but we haven’t been able to find nice festive cutters. I’m especially looking for a gingerbread man cutter that’s fairly slim around the waist rather than having a bulge!
5. Music
I’m getting into folk music right now, but often the songs are very sad and I can’t handle that. I’d like mp3s or CDs of happy (or at least not miserable!) folk music, especially songs that tell a story. Also anything fairy-like or magical, or songs about tea and cake that I can play at my summer tea-party. Oh, and also mp3s of some traditional 'cockney' type songs!
6. A random act of kindness
Do something unexpected and lovely for a friend or a stranger.
7. Plant a wildlife garden
In the UK, many insects and birds etc are becoming endangered. Butterflies, which used to be everywhere, are now a relatively rare sight. Bees are declining in number. You can help encourage them back by providing a habitat for them. This could be just a few flowers planted in a windowbox or plantpot, or a bigger project like making a pond or a whole wildlife-friendly garden. Just google ‘wildlife garden’ for ideas.
8. Watch my sister’s movie
My sister and her partner are working on breaking into the film industry and they have made a feature length movie that they are distributing online. It’s called ‘Jesus versus the Messiah’ and it’s a cross genre adventure-comedy-romance. You can download it quite cheaply but please don’t torrent it as this is the only income they get for it right now!

9. Cut your carbon footprint
Seriously. It’s important. And quite simple really. I recommend looking up Friends of the Earth – or even just googling – for advice.
10. Something from my Amazon wishlist.
It doesn’t have to be new, in fact I prefer secondhand. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/registry/19ZTV2KVLF6Y8

Happy holidays to all!

Date: 2008-12-18 08:23 am (UTC)I've been dealing with anxiety and depression for years now. A few years ago I got a program from here (http://www.stresscenter.com/) and I'm doing a lot better after using it. For years I'd watch the commercials for this and I thought it wouldn't help but it did. Even if you do not get the program, there are forums there to talk to others dealing with the same issues and the woman who started the program has books that are helpful. I checked one out at the library and it really helped.
Anyways, I hope you're feeling better and you have a wonderful holiday. If you want to email me, my email is cmd77@webtv.net. :)
Cheers!

Date: 2008-12-19 12:45 am (UTC)[9] I never realized how hard this was til I tried. I'm starting small - convincing a few friends to use hand-held can openers, the kind you crank, to avoid the using the power, switched to all canvas shopping bags, carpooling with a friend and, this is going to sound weird, but I squash toilet paper rolls flat, because as you pull the roll then, you end up using less.
Baby steps, I know, but I'm working at it.
And incidentally, your house is absolutely beautiful.

Date: 2008-12-20 10:13 pm (UTC)Glad you like my house! I don't own it but when I went to view it for renting I was in awe. And inside it has a fireplace with a bust of Shakespeare! I've lived here for 3 years and am still raving about it! :)

I've found that labyrinth walking has been an immense help in Dealing With Stuff.
There's a ton of good books out there on the subject, too. My favorites are by Lauren Artress and Melissa Gayle West.

Date: 2008-12-23 04:36 am (UTC)For music, I would suggest K3. They are a dutch band, and have sickeningly happy sounding music. If you can handle that type of music, it is guaranteed to make you feel better :)
I've been doing my best to become more green. I've started recycling paper, using compact flourescent bulbs, turn the thermostat down, use cloth shopping bags, and have started composting my plant matter waste to use in the garden.
