Dec. 21st, 2008 11:21 pmI realize this is rather late, so I decided to make my short list internet-only to make it easier. All of these can be emailed or posted here in the comments. :-)
1. Book recommendations. My favorite books are The Count of Monte Cristo and 1984, but I really want to start reading more modern literature. Other than Harry Potter and a few fantasy series- if it was written after 1970, I probably haven't read it.
2. Inexpensive but good wine suggestions. I never buy it because I'm never sure what's decent and there's sooooo much to choose from that I don't know where to start.
3. HQ pictures of NYC scenery. I always forget to take them when I'm there. Skyline, the parks, buildings, whatever, I love it all.
4. Your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. I'm trying to find the perfect one.
5. Netflix Watch Instantly recommendations. I use this function more than the DVDs, but it's hard to get a gauge of what's available.
6. Your first name. I'm not trying to stalk you, I'm just running out of ideas for my Sims. ;)
7. Anyone know how to build computers? I need to because Vista isn't compatible with the programs and files I use and my current desktop is ancient. The only company in my area that did that recently closed. Right now, I just need someone to answer questions about what I need (processor speed, memory size, etc.).
8. Peace on earth. I'll call this my big wish.
Happy Holidays everyone!

Date: 2008-12-22 06:27 am (UTC)I edited my post as soon as it came up because I knew the picture comment was confusing. I would really love a picture of the skyline, but I know from experience how hard it is to get a shot. Other than that, the iconic buildings, the parks and anything in the theatre district would all be great.
Thanks for all the recommendations! I'm currently reading Catcher in the Rye, and I'll definitely add the others to my reading list.

Date: 2008-12-22 10:01 am (UTC)I used to name all my sims after real life people, but then when the people found out, they started taking it personally when I'd let them die or set the house on fire or kill the kids or something lol

Date: 2008-12-22 03:33 pm (UTC)Steve Aylett: Atom (craziest, crackiest sci-fi I've ever read)
Mia Couto: Under the Frangipani (hauntingly beautiful mystery)
Mark Haddon: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time (exactly what it says in the tin)
Steven Hall: Raw Shark Texts (I recommend this for everyone, it is that amazing)
Daniel Hecht: Skull Session (dark, scary stuff but I still wouldn't call it horror)
Nick Hornby: A Long Way Down (suicidal people meet, decide not to kill themselves. Yet.)
John King: Human Punk (touching story from the blooming age of punk)
Alexander McCall Smith's Ladies' Detective Agency series (warm, optimistic, feel-good stories set in Africa but not sappy at all)
Martin Page: How I Became Stupid (you can't go wrong with a name like that)
Banana Yoshimoto: Kitchen (two shorter, simply beautiful stories in one book)
Carlos Ruiz Zafon: The Shadow of the Wind (beautiful mystery for anyone who's ever loved books)

Date: 2008-12-23 05:35 pm (UTC)Watch instantly rec: Coupling - the BBC version! All four seasons are on there (well, considering each season is only about 6 episodes long they should be!! Oh, but the last season is missing one of the main characters so you might want to skip that one.) and they're fantastically funny. That is, if you haven't seen it yet. That will give you a few hours of good viewing. :)
Book Rec: Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Seriously beautiful book. I've always been fascinated by the circus though (I wanted to be a clown for the longest time) so that may be why I loved it so much. It is an excellent book though.
