Christmas List
Dec. 26th, 2008 12:41 amI'm a little late. But I think that goes with the theme of my holiday.
Lemme see if I can narrow it down to just a few.
1. TV Shows. I'm all about TV shows. I was supposed to have finished an awesome site with info about what shows I have and have seen and whatnot, but... I'm a little late. But if you have some shows you love you can recommend them to me and I'll check them out (especially non-US shows). Or if you have some avi/whatever files that you could burn to a DVD(s) and mail me, that'd be cool. Or if you have some DVDs lying around that you're never going to watch again, I'd totally give them a good home.
I think last year I got asked what kind of shows I like... and I've gotten even less picky since then. If it's scripted, I'll probably watch it. Not so much with the reality TV. Fiction for me.
2. Fanfic. I'm all about the shipping/fanfic, right under my all about the TV shows. I was supposed to have finished a super list of all my ships and how much I like them and it was going to be all pretty and useful, but... I'm a little late. A lot of them are listed on my user info. At the very least, I think nearly every show I "seriously" watch is listed so that should narrow it down. If you have favorites, you can recommend them to me. If you keep track of sites that keep fanfic for shows/ships, you can share. If you have similar likes as me, we can discuss. If you write fanfic you can seriously make my day. I am full of useless ideas.
3. Puzzle Pirates. I would reeeeally like a white tiger. ; ; I was poor last year when they had them and they didn't do them again this year. It's the only limited edition pet I don't have.
4. Friends. Not so much LJ friends. I am a terrible LJ friend. I'm a super instant messaging friend though. I've got MSN, Skype, and AIM pretty much running all the time. I have Yahoo and ICQ accounts and could get on them if required. If we have interests in common (particularly shows or... stuff like programming/web programming/graphics/html/nerdy stuff like that) then send me a message. My AIM name is the same as my LJ name. Also the same for Skype. If you want me on MSN you may have to PM me. I don't remember if it's in my info.
5. Birthday. It's my birthday tomorrow... well... today. The 26th. I'm an ancient 28. If you see this today and would be so kind as to e-mail me or PM me or leave a message here or leave a message on my lj or anything really indicating that someone remembered my birthday (is it still remembering if I tell you right before you do it?), I would be pleased. Outside my immediate family nobody really says anything to me anymore. Relatives used to call sometimes but... now not so much.
I will call that a day. And feel virtuous for not listing 10 things.

Date: 2008-12-26 09:01 pm (UTC)I have a backlog of shows to watch though. But it's right after, like... Law & Order. That won't take me long, right? And my friend(s) keeps pestering me to watch Dexter.
I need to make a note to download Merlin though. I know absolutely nothing about it. Which should make it exciting to watch. ;)

Date: 2008-12-26 06:10 pm (UTC)It's hard to have birthdays around the holidays -- you always end up with folks combining the two and that sucks!
Here's a birthday pressie:
Leverage - one of the best caper shows ever. Tim Hutton is a hoot, the team is great, and you always come out having enjoyed knicking the back guy at his own game. Not unlike Hu$tle (UK-BBC/A&E in the US) with Robert Vaughn (also a hoot and well worth watching) in style (so see both if you can), but very much it's own show.
Eleventh Hour - Very much a discovery show - how'd this condition (illness, plague, medical event) occur, how do we stop it and how do we save those already with it? Not nearly as "light" as Leverage (not intended to be), but a really great watch.
Fringe - John Noble (Denethor, LOTR) is absolutely fabulous as the bug-frack crazy scientist who's the key to figuring out what's up when no one else can -- because no one ever taught him "you can't" or "you shouldn't" in science. As amoral as they come, but working for the good guys and so something of an enigma. He really doesn't get why "one shouldn't" -- and that makes for an excellent show. His handlers are pretty fantastic too (one's his son, the other is the partner).
Happy Birthday!!!

Date: 2008-12-26 09:23 pm (UTC)My parents watch Eleventh Hour but I've been putting it off... I tend to get burned by new shows being cancelled so I like to wait until they're a little more established. I figured I was safe with Fringe based on the massive amount of hype it was getting. >.>
Ah yes, I forgot about Leverage. ::adds it to the list::
I have Hustle downloaded but not watched yet. It seemed like the next in line after watching Spooks and Life on Mars.
I don't really have people who combine my presents... maybe it's just me and I'm lucky. I dunno.

Date: 2008-12-26 07:17 pm (UTC)Oh I also really like Jon and Kate Plus 8, it's a reality show though, but not typical reality shrug, its on TLC and about how these parents raise eight kids, one set of twins, one set of sextuplets. I have the first two seasons and random episodes of the third season if you're interested.
4- my aim name is brucasnaleyfan1 (I don't use it that often, but feel free to add me anyway)
5- Happy Birthday. I hope you have a great day. And I made you a little something, it's a wallpaper for Luke/Lorelai, but it's not that great, being my first ever wallpaper I made, but I hope you like it anyway, I just wanted to make you something especially for you, you don't have to use it

Date: 2008-12-26 09:33 pm (UTC)So if you wanted to burn me, like... all of season 1, or all of season 1 minus the first... 7 episodes or so, that'd be cool.
Brothers and Sisters would be cool too... I've seen random parts of episodes because I was switching to it while waiting for Without a Trace to start on Sunday nights.
I've seen all of Veronica Mars (finally) and I've seen most of the early Monk episodes... and I have them on DVD. Friends I would like to get sometime but really I've seen most of the episodes in syndication. Ghost Whisperer I've never seen and I probably should. I'll add it to the list (whoo, it's up to three now!). What else? Nope, that's it.
I know that Jon and Kate is pretty popular and hear of it occasionally, but it's not so much my type of show.
I added you to my buddy list.
The wallpaper does have a touch of that "first time" feeling to it ;) but actually doesn't look too bad. And it makes me warm and fuzzy that it was just for me. :D

Date: 2008-12-27 12:03 am (UTC)I have the first season of Brothers and Sisters, I haven't gotten the other one but I'll burn it for you. And I adore Friends, even though I have the box set, I still watch the reruns. Oh have you seen Dr. Who? I love that show too, I like season two of the new one with Billie Piper and David Tennett.
And thanks, I tried, I figured out how to use the eraser tool, but I need to figure out how to make it more blend into the background, but at least I tried, I wanted to make you something special. I'm so much better at icons.

Also if you want a non-pairing fanfic from the show that's awesome too!)grissom/catherine, sara/greg(csi), house/cameron, wilson/cuddy (house).

Date: 2009-03-01 01:30 am (UTC)I can help you with #1--if you're OK with downloading eps bit by bit. I'm posting eps of The Pretender one by one on Megaupload for friends. It's an AMAZING show, though it does take you a few eps to get really hooked, and what I have up so far may not yet be enough. I have issues with my CD/DVD drive right now, so trying to minimize any burning, etc. done. If you can do torrents, that's even easier--there's a handy torrent with the entire show out on all the major sites, pretty much.
The other show I'd find a way to share with you if you were interested is Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. It's a mix of sci-fi and romance, and has a lot of A-plot while focusing most on the relationship between Clark (who's Clark first and foremost, and Superman only later) and Lois. (Another plus is there is tons of great fanfic for this show--a small number of writers, but the fandom is remarkably close-knit and friendly--many of my closest online friends I met there.)
Fanfic . . . I tried, but I don't think I watch ANY of your shows! I do have Psych on my "to watch" list, and I've seen a few eps of Remington Steele, but didn't get hooked the same way a former roommate was. I actually liked Greatest American Hero more, for all its cheesiness. If you like fanfic for book series and/or movies as well, I can help out with some. The ones I know really good fanfic for are Lord of the Rings (bookverse--and it's hard to find good LOTR fanfic with all the movieverse twaddle clogging the fanfic archives!), Smallville (but I steer clear of anything from mid-S4 and on), X-Men (movieverse all the way here--I actually made a really long recs post of the very best, and have written a couple decent X-Men fics that I can share), Diane Duane's Young Wizards series, The Pretender (there's one really outstanding writer in that fandom, though it's one you really HAVE to watch the whole show before you read any fic--spoilers are difficult to keep straight due to the nonlinear time flow of revelations and occurrences), and Lois & Clark (there's a whole archive of thousands of fics devoted just to that show, many of them top quality).
I do write now and then, but I'm only really working in the X-Men fandom right now, and somewhat stuck. Real life keeps me away from almost all fandom activities. *sigh*

Date: 2009-03-04 12:56 am (UTC)I found Lois/Clark to be awesome on the show, but kinda dull in fanfic most of the time. I don't know if I was just reading the wrong stories or what. I had a secret desire to read Lois/Lex fics, but nobody had written any (at the time anyway) and I was too embarrassed to share my desire with anyone and eventually I just stopped paying attention to the fandom. Those two things were not necessarily related. lol
If you have suggestions for fanfic I'll check 'em out. I should probably watch the show again, actually. I've got season 1 on DVD but it hasn't actually made it into the player yet.
I've seen 3 or 4 episodes of The Pretender... I rented it from Hollywood Video a while ago but it didn't grab me fast enough and I had other things so I didn't rent the next disc. But I have season 1 on DVD now and it's on my list of things to watch. I guess I should bump it up a bit. I'm watching... Da Vinci's Inquest at the moment, and then I'll probably watch Due South, but then... maybe. I can't think that far ahead.
Oh and... yeah. I torrent all the time. Which is why I was hoping to find some people to mail me things so I could save on some bandwidth. It didn't work though.
I've actually got way more shows than are on my list. Like L&C. Almost everything on the list is stuff that either is old but I just recently watched it, or it's still airing. So some of my older favorite shows aren't on there. Because I don't think about them as much.
I don't read hardly at all so I don't read fanfic for books. I know that reading fanfic and yet not reading books are kind of opposite things, but there you are. Used to read all all all the time but then I hit high school or so and now I find it extremely difficult to sit down with a book. Dunno.
So that leaves... Smallville, which I don't really have any interest in (although I'll probably watch it eventually because I watch everything) and... X-Men. Except I'm only interested in fanfic for the X-Men comics and not the movies. Arrrr... we are complimentary in a non-helpful way.
Oh, if you do want to rec me some L&C fic, you could do it here (http://community.livejournal.com/het_reccers/) and then I'd feel like I was helpful and useful. Or you can just do it directly to me. Either way.

Date: 2009-03-04 02:58 am (UTC)The fanfic can be dull if you're an A-plot person and you get sick of B-plots--or if you get interested by weird ships with all sorts of crazy tension, and a warm romantic relationship between people destined to be together just doesn't have the same sort of spark, or any number of ways. I happened to like a lot of it, but that's not to say that you'll love it. But you might. :) I say this because I have some exceptionally talented friends which wrote some of that fanfic, and they won Kerth awards for it (online fanfic award ceremony they hold every year--anyone can nominate or vote, and anyone can attend, providing they've requested the IRC channel password in advance and do IRC--the ceremony's really scripted and amazing, very talented Kerth committee members every year).
The Pretender is a show you have to watch starting from the beginning. And watch it completely in order. And after a bit the characters start to grow on you till you just love 'em. I absolutely LOVE reading the fanfic by that one writer for the fandom--it blows me away every time. She has an amazing grasp on the subtleties of extremely complex relationships.
Hehe--I torrent a lot myself. I find it's the best thing to do when I don't have a lot of money for mailing stuff--and I don't get to a post office often. Paperback Swap is the biggest reason for mailing things these days.
Arrrr... we are complimentary in a non-helpful way.
Hee, too true. But if you ever decide to give movieverse a shot, I can recommend some fic that will make you cry. I also wouldn't mind reading some good comics fanfic if it doesn't get outlandish (which is an impossible request when it comes to comics--it seems everything in them is utterly outlandish to the point that it doesn't even internally make sense).
I would definitely love to rec some L&C fic, and will probably do it there--once I finish planning lessons for tomorrow and everything else I have to do (read "I don't know when I'll get to it, but it's on my list!"). *sigh* Student teaching is a killer. Heaps of fun, but extremely time-consuming.
For now, if you want to get started somewhere, let me know what your favorite genre/type of fanfic is. Do you like adventure/detective/let's crack the case? Or harrowing narrow escapes? Or angsty woeful tales? Or WAFFy gooey happy romantic melt-your-heart stories? There's a wide variety, so I'd like to find a good first one to try on you. :) (Sorry, can't think of any Lois/Lex ones where they end up together in the long run--only ones where Lois marries him--and later regrets it. I can rec some great ones where Lex is a controlling manipulative evil creature.)

Date: 2009-03-04 06:13 am (UTC)I'm not actually looking for Lois/Lex happily-ever-after or anything... but him not being a total jerk would be nice. He was kind of a normal human being...-ish back in the first season. And he seemed to have a serious thing for Lois.
And I just thought it would be interesting to see what people would do with the concept in fanfic since the show obviously wasn't going to do anything (which I wouldn't expect it to).
I can't believe I'm having a conversation about a ship I didn't want to admit to having. >.> Look what you've done to me.
Uhhhh... what kind of fanfic I like. Well let's see. As I mentioned, one of my all-time favorite fanfics is L&C, and out of curiosity I did a search to see if I could still find it online... it's here (http://www.lcfanfic.com/stories/dawning.txt). I actually tried e-mailing the author once or twice to say how awesome I thought it was, but I never got a response so I'm guessing it didn't go through.
I guess there are two main things I tend to like. 1, I like angst. Ideally with some making out. Angsty kissing is the best. It's... a disease I have. >.> I don't necessarily want a sad ending or anyone dying or anything, I just like... the idea that it's a struggle and it's not going to be perfect but it can still work out. If that makes sense.
2, I love love love that in Dawning she's got Lois/Clark as the a-plot, but there's b-plot stuff going on. Like, just because they're working on their relationship doesn't mean things aren't coming in to town to destroy everything. But it is b-plot... because ultimately I don't care what's destroying the city, I only care in so much as how it affects them.
Those don't have to go together, or even either be in a fic for me to like it, but they are things I like.
As for watching things in order... it's the only way I watch anything anymore. Thanks to the internet I can download an entire series before I start watching the first episode. So there's no reason to jump around. Makes my parents crazy when I'm like "No no change the channel I can't watch that!" but they're just parents, they'll get over it.

Date: 2009-03-04 12:06 pm (UTC)So you like more realistic fics--which would be an issue with L&C, as a lot of people go for the happily ever after ending. There are some more angsty ones in the process, though. :)
As for Lois/Lex . . . I can't say that I know of any where he's completely reasonable. He's pretty much a manipulative b******, and will always be so when his true colors are revealed. You can try LabRat's story Masques if you want a really good long read. And I mean long! I think it's *still* the longest story on the Archive, and that's saying a lot, considering two got posted one year that were around 1,300 k. (They measure stories by txt doc size, as txt files only store characters, no overhead formatting. 1,300 k means over a million words in that story.)
And if you want the mix of A & B plot, well, there's quite a few authors that do that. Nan Smith may be too happily-ever-after for you (and some people go nuts at the thought of Lois having children, not to mention the sheer number in her Dagger series), but I find her excellent at balancing A/B plot. Short of that, go with ML Thompson. ML writes great stuff. :D
All the above authors and fics are easy to find on the archive, so I'll leave you with that and get going with morning routines and such here.
