On the morning of 26th December 2004, the day after Christmas, Acheh, in northen Sumatera, Indonesia, was hit with an earthquake measuring almost 9 on the Richter scale.
This was soon followed by tsunamis in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Maldives, and even Kenya and Somalia.
The death toll so far is over 40,000, consisting of both locals and tourists visiting for the holidays (as well as many children), and over 100,000 people are homeless.
