I didn't find out about this comm. until after christmas last year, so this year I decided to join and post my wishlist early.
1. Lots of christmas-cards, both paper and e-cards
2. A snowglobe, preferably with something other than the traditional christmas theme, but any kind will do.
3. Cookbooks, or just a couple of great recipes.
4. A leather bracelet, or terrycloth wristband with some cool motif
5. The first season of Lost on DVD, or movies with William L. Petersen, Johnny Depp or Alan Rickman.
6. Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
7. Anything you made yourself.
8. A laptop or a new fountain pen for writing. Inspiration to write would also be nice.
9. For all my friends to have an awesome christmas!
10. World Peace, and an end to hunger and disease. Clicking here is one way of helping with that

On #3 - are there any specifics for recipes? Any allergies or perferences for things you wouldn't want included in them (vegetarian, vegan, etc)?

Date: 2005-12-01 07:26 pm (UTC)Herby Quick Bread
Date: 2005-12-03 04:16 am (UTC)2 tb sugar
1 tb baking powder
1/2 ts thyme
1/2 ts basil
1/2 ts garlic powder (or 3/4 ts garlic salt, and omit other salt)
1/2 ts rosemary
1/2 ts salt
1/2 cup shreaded cheese (I've been using Colby Jack)
1 beaten egg
3/4 cup milk
3/4 cup beer
1/2 cup veggie oil or olive oil <-- very tasty.
Mix together dry ingredients, mix together wet ingredients seperately. Add wet to dry, mix until a sticky dough forms. Stick it in a greased loaf pan.
1 hour, 350 degrees.
I've been using a pale beer for this recipe because it's ass beer that we're trying to get rid of. If you try something dark, let me know how it turns out. And really, most of the flavorings are just suggestions. I originally found the basis for this recipe floating somewhere on the internet. But the herb mixture in it sucked. Nutmeg, thyme and caraway? Blarg. 'Course, the fact that I hate caraway played a large factor. Then I read First Harvests for the nth time and decided to change the recipe to something more like what was described there.
Aaaaand, I just bought a boatload of Christmas gifts from the HungerSite. I *love* their shop.

Date: 2005-12-19 05:08 am (UTC)Ingredients
* 1/2 box of falafel mix
* 1 green pepper
* 1 onion
* 1 big carrot
* 1 yellow squash
* sliced mushrooms
* package of noodles
* jar of organic spaghetti sauce
Directions: Heat sauce while preparing the vegetables. Chop up the vegetable you like the most first, then chop up the others according to the amount of the first vegetable. Sauté in a little bit o' vegetable oil. Meanwhile, boil noodles in a pot of water until they become tender. Sauce is still heating, vegetables are still sautéing, noodles are still boiling - follow directions on falafel box (add mixture to water until it becomes solidly mushy). Form into little hushpuppy-sized balls and place in a little bit of vegetable oil in a skillet until they are browned and no longer mushy. Everything should get done at same time. Drain noodles, put veggies and falafel over it, add your sauce and stuff your face. :)

Baked Spaghetti Squash Lasagna Style
Prep Time: 30 Minutes
Cook Time: 1 Hour 15 Minutes
Ready In: Hour 45 Minutes
Servings: 6
INGREDIENTS:
* 1 spaghetti squash, halved lengthwise and seeded
* 1 onion, chopped
* 2 tablespoons minced garlic
* 2 (14 ounce) cans stewed tomatoes
* 1 tablespoon dried basil
* 1 cube vegetable bouillon
* black pepper to taste
* 1 (15 ounce) can black olives, chopped
* 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
* 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Spray a baking sheet with a thin layer of cooking spray. Place squash halves cut side down on the baking sheet.
2. Bake squash 35 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a knife can be easily inserted. Remove from oven, and cool.
3. Meanwhile, spray a non-stick saucepan with cooking spray. Over medium heat, saute the onion and garlic until golden brown. Stir in tomatoes, basil, bouillon cube, and black pepper. Cook for about 15 minutes, or until you have a medium thick sauce.
4. Remove squash strands with a fork, reserving the shells. Layer each half with a spoonful of the sauce, a layer of spaghetti squash strands, olives, and mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers until shells are full, or until all of the ingredients are used. Top with Parmesan cheese.
5. Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until Parmesan cheese melts.
NOTE:
If you like, place the seeds on the same baking sheet as the spaghetti squash, sprinkle with garlic salt, and roast until done, about 30 minutes. Use them as appetizers.
