Date: 2005-11-02 08:08 pm (UTC)A Harry Potter fic...hope ye like...
Date: 2005-11-03 12:21 am (UTC)Hermione would never have called herself popular. If anyone had asked, she would have readily admitted it. She could count on one hand the friends she remembered having as a little girl. Come to think of it, she wouldn’t even have needed one finger.
She was used to it by now, all the name-calling, the whispering behind her back. The other kids didn’t like the strange girl who got the best marks. Hermione was the know-it-all, the teacher’s pet. But that one wasn’t quite true; half the time, even the teachers didn’t like her.
Well, she couldn’t help it if she knew more about the lessons by the end of the first week than the teachers knew months in. It wasn’t her fault if she was better prepared, if she read the entire book when she was only supposed to read one chapter. She was enthusiastic about learning; she liked it.
When Hermione learned that she was a witch, and that there were entire schools devoted to their education--when she received her letter from Hogwarts--she thought that she’d finally be accepted. She let herself believe that she would be able to leave behind all the teasing that she’d received from the Muggle children.
Learning that she was wrong was hard to take. Hermione Granger was never wrong.
It was so disappointing that the pressure built up too quickly to endure. That was how she found herself crying in the girls’ bathroom on Halloween. It wasn’t something that she tended to do; usually she would just brush the mockery off and hide behind a book until it was over.
When the mountain troll cornered her there, she thought she was going to die. She was terrified, but a small part of her was more afraid of something else: That the other students wouldn’t care if she did die. That they’d be a bit glad to get rid of the annoying little girl who corrected even the professors.
So Hermione was relieved when Harry and Ron came to help her. It wasn’t just because they fought the troll. It was because they cared enough to do it, even if it meant risking their lives for someone they usually made fun of.
After that, Hermione never minded so much when the two of them teased her, because she knew that they never meant it. She knew that they would always be there to give her a hand, just as they could always count on her.
Hermione finally knew what it was like to have true friends. And that felt pretty good.
