Tagging is a quick way for others to be able to find your wishlist by what sorts of wishes you've made, and also makes it easier for you to browse through wishes other people have made.
If you look at the main page of the community, you will see a "Links" section with "Wishlists By Categories". By adding tags you can make your wishlist accessible to others when they choose to browse the categories. All it takes is a few mouse clicks and you can add your wishlist too.
How to Tag
After you have submitted your wishlist and it has been approved, it will appear on the community. Once this has happened you can go back to your post and add tags.
Step 1
View your post through the "Comments" view. From there you should see the buttons for doing various things like editing your post, adding it to memories, adding tags, etc.
As shown above, the "tags' button is the second to last button. Click this.
Step 2
You will now see a screen with your post - scroll to the bottom until you find the following:
Select the tags that match the types of wishes you have in your wishlist. To select multiple tags, hold down the "Ctrl" key and click the desired categories.
Once you have chosen all of the tags you desire, simply click the "Save changes" button.
You're finished! Now your wishlist post will be added to all of the Categories you selected.

If you are unable to find a tag that fits your wishes, please feel free to comment and make a suggestion.
Update: 2006
New tags have been added for this year for Continent, Country, and Name. Please be certain to tag your post for the continent and country you reside in and also tag for the first letter in your username, as well as for the types of wishes you've made. This will make it easier for people closer to where you live to grant wishes for you if they only wish to mail things out within their own country. It will also make it so that people searching for your wishlist will have a better chance of finding it if they remember what your username was.
If there is no tag for your country yet, please don't be offended - let me know here via comment and I'll gladly add it to the Tags list!

But I added the tag for United Kingdom by accident. The LJ FAQ implies that only mods can delete tags from a community post (I tried and I can't get it to clear out).
If it's not a huge hassle, could you delete the United Kingdom tag from my entry?
I feel like a dumbass. :)

Date: 2006-11-27 09:08 pm (UTC)you might try a tag for fiber arts or spinning, weaving, felting. They are pretty popular in some areas, but dont *quite* fit under knitting...... i dont know how high demand would be for it (other than me of course)
you might also consider "media related" for all the requests for TV and movie related items.... likewise with comics or webcomics related items.

2) Some people aren't comfortable having their ages or age-range specified.
3) This is the Internet so sadly we have to be careful of people that might abuse such a tag - having a "teens" tag for instance could make them a target for someone with unsavory designs.
