[identity profile] estonianpunkcat.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] holidaywishes

I only recently found out about this community via a friend mentioning it and so I'm sorry I'm squeezing in at literally the last possible minute with a wishlist. I'm late for everything, it seems. This community is absolutely heartwarming, by the way.

I only really have five wishes. :]

1. Cameras! I know this is kind of a big one but I mean more along the lines of if you have any spare disposable cameras laying around, or a Holga, polaroid or other such camera that you just don't use anymore. I don't have the money to buy one but I miss the look and feel of film a lot.
2. Anything small and Scandinavia-related. Trinkets, postcards, little books, fabric swatches, you name it. I'm Estonian-American but somehow that mutated into a love of all things Scandinavian.
3. Postcards from anywhere, particularly outside of the US. I rarely get them but when I have gotten them they've made me smile like few other things can.
4. Recommendations for good books, short stories, and poems. I can't get enough of any of these.
5. As soon as possible go and give someone a hug and tell them you love them. The world needs more of this.

I can at least recommend a couple of books for you! Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman is just terrific, so hilarious and snarky and just awesome. It's really a great book. Also, I just finished The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom, and it's incredibly touching and deep with a protagonist you can really relate to. I actually hugged it after I had finished it. ♥

As for poems, one I find particularly lovely is i carry your heart with me by e. e. cummings.

i carry your heart with me
by e. e. cummings

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

My top five authors are the following and hopefully you'll find some good reads if you check them out:

Janet Evanovich (humour/crime/romance novels, author of the Stephanie Plum Series, has co-written a few books, too)

J.D Robb (crime/romance/humour, author of the "In Death" series, slightly more mature, serious version of Evanovich, but still majorly laugh-out-loud-and-scare-the-person-sitting-next-to-you moments.) she churns out two books a year (I'm told) and her "in death" series has about 30 books in it at the moment, I think. Great if you're want a pretty much neverending story ^^

MaryJanice Davidson (humour/romance/supernatural-ish, author of the "undead" series, nice writing, if you choose to read the "undead" series then the main charecter is an aquired taste (READ: kind of whiney) but still pretty damn good)

Sarah Dessen (romance/growing up/coming-of-age stories. She writes her books with teenagers in mind but she's still one of my favourites. I reccomend "Just Listen" and "This Lullaby")

Tamora Pierce (Humour/Romance/Coming-of-age/action/adventure/historic (if you squint), ditto on the target audience thing, but Pierce is a damn good read, she's done quite a few series (four to five books per series so she can be an easy read if you're not in for long haul) most of the series interlink so you'll get cameos from different charecters in different series.

Also, check out fanfiction.net for some good reads. You'll have to fight your way through some utter rubbish but there are some real gems hidden away. (I'm "Bloody Rock God" on ff.net, so if you sign up and send me a private message or something and I can always point you in the direction of good X:Men fics ^^ (espeically Remy/Rogue)

I've rambled quite a bit but I hope this has helped.

The book, "America: The Book" by Jon Stewart is very, very funny, and the Teacher's Edition is even better. :D
